~ 1 3/4" ~ Bone Lister Barb ~ Taylor Co. Florida ~
Length: 1 3/4"
Grade: 10
Description: This artifact is a remarkably well preserved Native American fishing spear barb called a Lister Barb. Meticullously crafted from a Deer Cannon Bone. These bones were carefully split, ground down to sharp points. To enhance their effectiveness, these additional bone spurs, or spikes (Called Lister barbs) were affixed to the sides of socketed Bone Harpoons using natural adhesives and bindings, creating a multi-pronged gig. This design made them particularly useful for fishing from dugout canoes, allowing indegenous hunters to skillfully harpoon fish in shallow waters.
